AMP Interviews with the biggest movers and shakers in the Apartment Management Industry

When I heard Seanne discuss “How to Find the Right Team Members” on the Apartments on the Go podcast, I was intrigued!  Having been in staffing before, I relate to her outside the box recruiting tactics – like the time she recruited an Uber driver!  If you get the pleasure to talk with her, make sure you have a pen and paper ready because she has fantastic ideas and experience.

I love dissecting words and looking for greater meaning like the word Apartment.  What sets you “Apart” and why are you “Meant” for the multifamily industry?

I think what sets me apart is my ability to, “Keep it Real”.  I encourage my teams to just cut the bureaucracy out and give it to me straight.  Don’t worry about what my title is or what you think I want to hear, just tell me the facts so that we can move forward.  I am meant for this industry because at the core of it all I truly believe in growing teams to grow your business. There are no property problems, only people problems!

How and when did you get your start in the industry?

The year was 2001!  I was just starting college and I was approached by the on-site staff of my first apartment and they said I would be great at leasing!  I was hooked ever since.

What is one song that always puts you in a good mood?

Canned Heat, Jamiroquai!!  “Dance!  Nothing left for me to do but dance!”

What are 3 tips you would give someone considering a career in multifamily?

Put in the work!  Do not do yourself a disservice by trying to jump ahead too quickly.  Really master each role.  Don’t pigeon hole yourself into only one property class.   Learn it all!!!  You are not ready to move up until you are bored to tears in your current role and until you have found and trained your replacement.

What is your proudest moment in multifamily?

Taking an entire 35 property portfolio from a 40% employee retention to an average of 80% employee retention rate through my own proven recruitment and team-building techniques.

Who is your mentor and why?

Debbie Jones with Lauth Communities.  She taught me everything thing I know.  Debbie made me work for all my own answers.  Debbie taught me how to see the real issues and when/how to give and take.  Her professional and life lessons have stuck through me these 20 years in the biz.

What book has left the biggest impression on your life?

“Working With You is Killing Me!”

If you ever owned an apartment community, where would it be and what would you name it?

Good question!  Buena Vista Colorado right where you can look up and see several mountains.  I guess I’d call it The View!

What is your most memorable vacation?

Colorado 2011.  Being on top of Grays Peak at 14,270 feet. Sitting on the side of the mountain as a mountain goat strolled by.

If our country went to 4-day work weeks, how would you spend your 5th day?

I would split time between napping with my cats and being a tourist in my own City!  Or I would take many more long weekends traveling the country!
