AMP Interviews with the biggest movers and shakers in the Apartment Management Industry

Even though I have never “met” Kendall, that didn’t stop him from making a big AMPression on me!  You can tell, by his title, that he is into ensuring a good experience for everyone he interacts with.  Just the other day, he encouraged his LinkedIn network to just “smile and laugh a little.”  After reading the answers to my interview, it’s no surprise that one of his tips is “Wear a smile regardless of any situation.” Oh, and it helps that he shares the same name as my daughter – just spelled differently.

I love dissecting words and looking for greater meaning like the word Apartment.  What sets you “Apart” and why are you “Meant” for the multifamily industry?

I would start by saying you have to really love the hustle and bustle of the apartment industry. You never know what may come your way in a day’s time. My love for constant change is what sets me apart. Before joining Cortland, I use to work for The Breeden Company and would travel constantly doing various lease-ups. As the Field Operations Manager, I was also “the fixer” for stabilized sites that were struggling with occupancy. The day I stepped foot in a leasing office I knew I was meant to make a difference. I did not think I would still be on this career path but property management is my drive!

How and when did you get your start in the industry?

I got started in January 2011 to be exact. A friend of the family had recently relocated from Atlanta, GA, and had years of experience in the industry. She encouraged me to apply for a part-time leasing consultant position and I said why not. The rest is history…

What is one song that always puts you in a good mood?

I Wanna Dance with Somebody – Whitney Houston

What are 3 tips you would give someone considering a career in multifamily?

1) Have a desire to learn and a burning fire

2) Be flexible and calm under pressure

3) Wear a smile regardless of any situation

What is your proudest moment in multifamily?

Taking a foreclosed asset in the heart of Richmond, VA from 60% to 96% occupied for acquisition in 60 days.

Who is your mentor and why?

Kimberly Maddox….and I don’t even think she knows how much I look up to her. Kimberly effectively managed 12 sites across the Greater Charlotte area and Northern VA ranging from 630 to 178units before moving on to Pinnacle. She took the time to sit down and really get to know my goals and aspirations for the multifamily industry. I still communicate with her until this day.

What book has left the biggest impression on your life?

This may not be the most professional response but “Oh the Place You’ll Go” by Dr. Seuss.

If you ever owned an apartment community, where would it be and what would you name it?

I would go back home to the heart of VA Beach and the name…Kewen 7200 comes to mind. Kewen is a combination of my name and my identical twin brother Wendell. 7200 just has a nice ring to it!

What is your most memorable vacation?

Puerto Rico – it was like living in the US but ten times better.

If our country went to 4-day work weeks, how would you spend your 5th day?

I would spend my 5th day exploring new restaurants and local attractions.
