AMP Interviews with the biggest movers and shakers in the Apartment Management Industry

Have you ever met someone that will truly give you the shirt off their back?  That’s Ian.  Every place I have been with him, I’ve witnessed him go out of his way to help others.  In addition, if you have ever presented to him in person like I have, you’ll likely be so glad that he’s in the room because he has a very calming presence and will always put you at ease.  Oh, and if you’ve ever been on a plane with him, you better believe that he will be checking out his tactless travel companions and posting his disapproval on social media – which is always hilarious!  And no matter what, this Dawgs fan can look past him shouting Roll Tide.  I mean, it’s for the support of his family so I guess it’s ok!

I love dissecting words and looking for greater meaning like the word Apartment.  What sets you “Apart” and why are you “Meant” for the multifamily industry?

I joined the apartment industry looking for a way to be involved in real estate on a "bigger level". As my career has evolved I have found great propose with the Army mantra "People First, Mission Always". I/We at CF strive to embody that statement with the apartments we provide and the careers that we cultivate.

How and when did you get your start in the industry?

II started in multifamily in 1999 (this makes me old), I worked for Inland out of Oak Brook IL leasing at B/C class assets.

What is one song that always puts you in a good mood?

This shouldn't be an embarrassing question but somehow I feel like it is.... Jimmy Buffett, Boat Drinks

What are 3 tips you would give someone considering a career in multifamily?

1. This is a service industry, be prepared to enjoy being of service to everyone you interact with.

2. You were born with two ears and one mouth, listen twice as much as you speak.

3. Write it down

What is your proudest moment in multifamily?

I don't think I have a single moment I can point to, my proudest achievements would be helping to advance and grow careers. I glow with pride when I attend an annual conference and people I hired as managers or leasing consultants are now RPM's and VP's of companies.

Who is your mentor and why?

I've had the opportunity to work with many strong leaders in my career, I honestly have tried to learn from their strengths and weaknesses. That being said I don't know that I can name one person.

What book has left the biggest impression on your life?

Nineteen Stars, Author: Edgar Puryear

If you ever owned an apartment community, where would it be and what would you name it?

This question is a little loaded as I do have ownership in some communities and have participated in the naming process. That being said I'd love to build a high-end community in Antigua and name it "The Ellise" after my daughter.

What is your most memorable vacation?

Family trips to Disney have created the most memorable moments for me, we continue to go annually even as the kids are now adults.

If our country went to 4-day work weeks, how would you spend your 5th day?

I would alternate between donating time to Veterans groups and laying on the beach.
